Language activism

An, May 26th, 2005 § 0 ,

The idea for this blog came up during Verbindingen/Jonctions 9, a multimedia artsfestival in Brussels organized by Constant vzw. Playing with words was the issue of the day. On a bustrip Marijs Boulogne invited all the participants in the festival to play with the notions of gender and sex in their primary language. They were asked to make 3 lists:

- equivalents of genderspecific proverbs
- words that should be deleted from our vocabulary
- words that should be added to our vocabulary

“When we want to live in an utopy, when we want to dream of a world where we are all happy, we can start doing that ourselves by re-creating the language. The dictionaries are begging us – women – to please voluntaristically come up with proposals. Don’t use male words to talk about yourself and your stuff. This is not done. ” (Marijs Boulogne)
Everyone – women and men – can play the game. Do your job in your own primary language.
